Some girls may say lucky me but I say it’s just my job; recently I had the pleasure of interviewing “Mr. I’m So Cocky” himself, Sunny Phoenix and I must say it was pretty fun. However normally people that are “cocky” won’t take the time to open up and let people know what’s really good but Sunny Phoenix stepped out of the “cocky” stereotype and let it all out. And as for my ladies, I think some of you will be happy with one of his answers:

With a name like “Sunny Phoenix” you already know I’m going to ask how that name came about.

Ironically 2 of my Favorite Movies Spawned the Name Sunny Phoenix. Being Lightskinned My Friends always called me Sunny but it was my Favorite movie A Bronx Tale that ultimately made me accept the Moniker. Sonny was the Neighborhood Gangster and all around Frank Sinatra type Mob figure with a genuine heart sort of the Good Bad Guy. Now Phoenix I acquired from The Movie Demolition Man Wesley Snipes played an evil No holds Barred Simon Phoenix who didn’t care about a thing in the world. More so the bad guy gone badder, Put the 2 together and u have A Good an Evil Persona of Sunny Phoenix I can be a Cool calm smooth Rapper on a love song or a maniacal take your heads off Lyricist all in the same Body.

You say “Hip Hop has been destroyed so I’m here to rebuild” how do you plan on doing so and when did you have your WTF moment realizing that Hip Hop was going south?

I say it has been destroyed more so at the A&Rs Labels Promoters and Radio side of it. It’s at a state where Talented Artist are being overlooked for Artist who don’t even Live breathe die and Pump music. I want to bring back the feeling of hearing Music that would make u stay parked in your car windows up on a Hot summer day just to hear that last Bar. Now a days we here music on the radio that won’t be remembered in 5 let alone 2 years. The Music business isn’t looking for Longevity Artist these days they want quick bucks so they give fads 15minutes of fame and throw them away. I want you to listen to my album and think “This Kid didn’t compromise he did it his way”. My Out The Box Movement Campaign will push Me and other artist to explore Music different melodies more instruments and sounds i want my music played in Stadiums and remembered 10 or 20 years from now.

In your song “ I Choose You ” it seems like your telling the story of Sunny Phoenix and letting it be known that you are “ here to stay ” was this just the beginning for you?

Funny thing about I Choose You that song came later in my career but right on time. I just remember ish playing the song and 20minutes later I had all the lyrics down, and yes it is my ode to “You Can’t Run From Your Destiny” the track says Music Chose Me I didn’t wake up one day and think I’m gonna be a rapper, My whole life i was surrounded by artist, music, melodies and entertainers and not once abuse it. From Cab Calloway to Jay-Z Carole King   to Lauryn Hill I let you know that These artist influence hip hop country pop and gospel every aspect was a stepping stone for me and I Love It.

Where do you get a lot of the inspiration for the music you write?

Honestly everything inspires me to write from growing up in a single parent home to living in 1 of the country’s Most Dangerous Cities I see The Light & the Dark of every story and I put it to music. I want the world to see The World from my Point Of View like the Temptations and smoky gave us Detroit’s view Prince gave us Minnesota’s view and Kanye gave us Chicago’s. Here is Inland empire’s View. Told By ME inspired by every Person I meet. Drug dealers and teachers i have no limitations i want to show you every angle.

Growing up in San Bernardino what introduced you to music?

It was actually a combination of My Mother playing Temptations Frank Sinatra and Diana Ross to My Uncle Wayne Being the Local DJ that introduced me. At Age 10 I would sneak into my Uncle’s Garage with my cousin William and we would mess with the turntables for hours. Then we would write our own rhymes and battle each other to see who was better of course I would always win haha. I can remember my mom having this Cassette tape of Will Smith and I was like Yo who is this Parents Really don’t understand haha. I was Blown Away i wanted to be Will Smith Hell Still one of My Favorite Artist.

I read that you grew up as the son of a drug dealer, what made you not choose to be like your father?

I never knew my Dad I kinda think the reason sunny came about was because I didn’t want to be called by his name. Seeing my Mom Struggle my Whole life and i could only think how could u leave your kids. Plus Going to jail just isnt Me I want to be able to raise my kids when i have them and not have to wonder if I’m going to be dead or locked up while they grow Up.

When you worked with Robin Thicke did he give you any advice that you could take with you?

More so his actions. I came into a great Camp Storm Daniels Marlaina Kemp Robin Thicke who all had previous Songs written on popular artist it was just a blessing to be around them. I remember being in the Studio when robin recorded 2 the sky and i literally teared up to the lyrics but the way he records i mean from start to finish no punches just let it play and he sat there and played the piano and sang every note the whole 6min thru no mess ups. He gets up and we go into the next room and we start writing this song If I while The band hangs out. That’s an artist right there hell I showed him how to work Myspace and he was so deep into music Myspace was like a brand new toy to him. I will always keep that drive and determination in me All music All the time

How did you come up with the idea of “Mr. I’m So Cocky” or have you been cocky your whole life?

My Family was the Family that was good in everything. We always got 1st we always got the girls we were popular everyone wanted to spend the night at our house. All we know is to be the best at what we do so cocky was just a DNA strand to us. It kinda carried over in my personality and my Homegirl Jessica Hiromoto (MO) one day jus Said “Sup Mr. I’m so Cocky” and I neva looked Back.

When people call you “ The Entertainers’ Entertainer ” is that something that pushes you to do better and better or do you block all that out?

I Love to Perform I Hit the Stage wit so much Energy that Any other artist in the crowd wants to jump up on stage and rock with me. So in a sense it does push me but I don’t go into the performance thinking “Better than b4″ I go in Thinking This Is My Last Show Leave Em with something to talk about.

And last but not least, this is my question for everyone. Because you are “Mr. I’m So Cocky” that means you can get just about any girl you want. Have you taken advantage of that and picked your one and only OR are you still testing the waters?

….I Plead the 5th haha I’m so focused on Music I wouldn’t Notice. Yes I test the waters but Music is always first in my Life. I Love Women yet A Woman has a hard time being second to Music and at this time I’m not going to give up music for Anything. I also feel Anything or One i want i can get So Look out cuz once my eyes are Set I get focused on that Task Hahaha.
